Calculator or solver?

A calculator is the right choice when you already know the operation and just need it carried out correctly — differentiate this, invert that, factor this polynomial. Each one explains the rule it applied at every step, so it doubles as a check on your own method rather than a black box that hands back a number.

If you are looking at a problem and are not yet sure what it is asking for, a subject solver is the better starting point, because it will identify the problem type before solving it. And if the underlying method is what is missing rather than the arithmetic, the concept guides derive each one from first principles instead of just stating it.

A note on trusting output: these tools are reliable on well-formed input and much less so on ambiguous notation or problems that depend on a diagram. Always sanity-check a result — substituting your answer back into the original equation catches most errors in seconds, and five other verification tricks catch nearly all the rest.
