How this is scored

Five criteria, because a single overall ranking hides the only thing that matters, which is that different tools fail in different places. Correctness is whether the final answer is right. Working is whether the steps in between teach you anything. Coverage is how far the tool reaches beyond routine algebra. Free tier is what you get without paying. Input is how the problem gets in.

Behind those five sits a fixed battery of ten problems, chosen because each one exposes a different failure mode rather than because they are hard:

  1. A routine quadratic, which everything should get right.
  2. A quotient-rule derivative whose answer needs simplifying to be usable.
  3. A limit that wants factoring rather than L'Hôpital.
  4. An integral needing a substitution that is not the obvious one.

Read down the yearly column and the uncomfortable fact is plain: at $99.99 a year, Gauth Plus is the most expensive of the dedicated maths tools here. Mathway and Symbolab are around $40, Wolfram Alpha Pro is $60, Photomath is $69.99. Our monthly price of $11.99 with a three-day trial sits above every other dedicated maths tool in the table too, all of which list at around $10 or less. That is a real difference, and the honest framing is that you are paying for unlimited use with written reasoning and unmetered follow-ups, not for a lower number.

Symbolab is the awkward one to quote. Its web sign-up page and its app-store listings show different figures, with monthly prices reported anywhere from about $7 to about $10 depending on channel and promotion. Check the price on the surface you are actually buying through.

Correctness, and the split that explains it

The tools in this list are built on two fundamentally different technologies, and almost every difference in reliability follows from which one a tool chose.

Wolfram Alpha, Symbolab, Mathway and Photomath are symbolic engines. They parse your input into an expression tree and apply algorithms to it. Within the space of problems they can parse, they do not make arithmetic errors, because there is no step at which a wrong-but-plausible token could be produced. When they fail, they fail visibly: they refuse the input, or they solve a different problem from the one you meant.

Gauth and ChatGPT are language models. They read the problem the way a person does, which is why they handle worded, ambiguous, or oddly formatted questions far better, and why they can explain a step in sentences rather than in notation. It is also why they can produce a confident wrong line. Both failure modes are real and neither is fixable by trying harder.

So on correctness, Wolfram Alpha takes the category outright, and we would be wasting your time claiming otherwise. If your problem is a definite integral, an eigenvalue, or a unit conversion with a physical constant in it, a deterministic engine is the right instrument. The practical consequence is that you should verify final numbers from any language-model tool, ours included. That is not a disclaimer, it is a method: substitute the answer back, sanity-check the magnitude, check the units. The working shown

This is the category where the differences are largest and where the marketing language is least useful, because everybody claims step-by-step solutions and they mean four different things by it.

Symbolic step lists. Symbolab and Mathway output the algebraic transitions: line, line, line, with a short label for the rule used. Accurate and compact. If you already know the method and lost your place, this is exactly enough. If you do not know why line three follows from line two, it will not tell you.

Pedagogical step lists. Photomath is the best of these for school-level work. It breaks a problem into small steps, often offers more than one method for the same problem, and its paid tier adds animated walkthroughs. The design intent is clearly teaching rather than answering, and it shows.

Terse machine derivations.Wolfram Alpha's step-by-step output is correct and mechanical. It will tell you it applied the chain rule without much sense of why that was the move.

Written reasoning.ChatGPT and Gauth explain in prose, which is the format that answers “why is this allowed” rather than “what happened next”. This is the category we win, and the mechanism is not mysterious: a solution written in sentences can carry the justification, and one written as a list of expressions cannot.

One structural difference matters more than it sounds. Follow-up questions on a Gauth answer are included and do not consume your daily quota, so the natural move — read the solution, find the one line you do not follow, ask about that line — costs nothing. On tools with per-solution metering, asking a clarifying question means spending another solution, which quietly trains you not to ask.

Coverage, free tiers, and input

Coverage. ChatGPT wins on breadth by a distance, because it is not a maths tool: it will also mark your essay and debug your code. Wolfram Alpha wins on computational depth, with curated data, units, physical constants and chemistry that nothing else here touches. Gauth covers STEM broadly — maths, physics, chemistry — but not humanities. Photomath, Symbolab and Mathway are maths only, deliberately.

Free tiers. Photomath takes this category and it is not especially close. Its core step-by-step solver is free, which means the thing students actually need costs nothing; the subscription buys animated tutorials and textbook-matched solutions on top. Google Lens homework mode is free entirely. Gauth is decent here — the first solution needs no account at all, and a free account gets three a day — but decent is not best, and Mathway is the clear loser, giving you an answer and locking every step behind Step-by-Step Access.

Input. Photomath is the strongest camera product in the category; recognition of handwritten work is its core competence rather than a feature. It is also mobile-only, with no browser version, so it is unusable on a school Chromebook or a laptop. Gauth is the mirror image: you can type or photograph a problem in a browser, and there is no app to install because there is no app. If your homework happens on a phone, that is a genuine reason to pick something else, and we would rather say so here than have you find out after subscribing.

Wolfram Alpha. The reference standard for getting a right answer, and the widest computational coverage of anything in this list. ChatGPT. The most flexible, the least specialised. Excellent at reading a badly worded question and at explaining a concept; capable of a confident arithmetic slip in the middle of an otherwise good solution. Free tier is usable, Plus is $20 a month. Where a general chatbot struggles with maths is worth reading before you rely on it for graded work.

One last thing worth saying on a page like this. The tool matters much less than the order in which you use it. Reading a solution before attempting the problem produces the feeling of understanding and almost none of the learning; attempting first and then comparing line by line produces the opposite. Wolfram Alpha, for anything you can state as a precise computation. It is a computation engine rather than a language model, so it does not make arithmetic slips and it does not invent a plausible-looking wrong step. The trade-off is that it needs the problem stated in a form it can parse, and its step-by-step working reads like machine output. For a worded or ambiguous problem, a language-model tool usually sets it up better and then needs its final number checked.
Is there a genuinely free AI math solver?
Photomath is the most generous of the paid products, because its core step-by-step solver is free and the subscription mainly buys animated tutorials and textbook-matched solutions. Google Lens homework mode, which absorbed the discontinued Socratic app, is free outright with no tier at all, though the explanations are shallower. Does Gauth have a mobile app?

Anything with a fraction bar drawn at an angle is a coin toss across the board.
Is using a solver for homework cheating?
It depends on what you do with the output, not on which tool produced it. Copying a worked solution onto a sheet you hand in is submitting work that is not yours, regardless of source. Attempting the problem, then comparing your working against a full solution to find the line where you diverged, is how good students have always used answer keys. Your institution's policy is the binding version, and it usually turns on submission rather than consultation.
